10. The Wonder Years: The Upsides
The Wonder Years set out with a mission statement, to save pop-punk, and this album will make all the fathers of pop-punk proud. The Upsides features strong guitar and vocals leading to songs about love and home. Top song from here I give to Melrose Diner, a fun song about hating the new guy your ex is with featuring quick guitar and drums and a fun bridge. This album cracks my top of 2010 with excitement for more from these guys.
9. You Me And Everyone We Know: Some Things Don't Wash Out
Truly the most "fun" album on this list the guys from YMAEWK have fun lyrics to songs with great meaning. You get serious songs in Bootstraps, a top pick from the album, with a message that you should never let anyone get you down. A Bigger Point of Pride fits in with some lines you'll want to have on repeat "number 22308 my overwhelming urge to hyperbolate". YMAEWK gives a fun album you'll be singing along to and rocking out with.
8. Valencia: Dancing With a Ghost
After an amazing release in 2008 with "We All Need a Reason To Believe", Valencia came back strong with "Dancing With a Ghost". Taking a new approach it worked perfectly and I enjoyed the CD from start to finish. Top song definitely goes to "Losing Sleep" with the greatest lyrics I've heard in awhile: "Give me the chance to speak my mind/my opinions are the social kind/if its you for you, and I for I/One of us is going to leave here blind". Shane Henderson's amazing lyrically ability as well as vocals definitely leaves this is one of my top albums for 2010.
7. American Hi-Fi: Fight The Frequency
Anyone remember these guys? After a giant hit with "Flavor Of The Week" the band hit many problems, its biggest becoming the backing band for Miley Cyrus. The hiatus did them well and Fight The Frequency turned out to be an incredible album. The guitar playing proves to be excellent the entire way through, getting featured on "Tiny Spark" where riff after riff continues to get the air guitar out. "Lost" and "Where Love Is A Life" tie for my top pick in songs from this album. "Lost" having stellar lyrics following the story of a guy waiting for his dream girl to come back to him. "Where Love Is A Lie" really hit at the right time for me, coming just months after my breakup. The acoustic backed verses get you into a mellow mode in this song about losing love until the hard hitting chorus comes in: "and the will to pretend in you dies/you remember the light in her eyes and how you left it all behind". American Hi-Fi didn't forget its routes with fun songs and Acetate definitely fits a radio-ready song from these guys.
6. The Narrative: The Narrative
The first time I listened to this album all the way through, I was simply amazed that this band had not been signed and made into one of the top new bands of the year. Featuring dual vocalists, both excel when either having a song to themselves or creating perfect harmonies. The musicianship of the members is flawless and the lyrics seem to fill every void and emotion one can have. THis album proved to be the best catharsis and can fit my any mood from mellow with "Turncoat", sadness in "Don't Want To Fall", anger in "Starving For Attention", and upbeat with "Fade". There seems to be little flaw with this first release and I cannot wait to hear more from these guys.
5. Eminem: Recovery
I find myself amazed that I have this album here at 5. Eminem came back strong this year after a terrible release in Relapse. I remember being late to work because I went to Best Buy to get the album first thing in the morning and I don't regret it at all. In the first single from the album "Not Afraid", Eminem proclaims "I'm back" and this album shows that Marshall Mathers is back at the top of his game. Overplayed single "Love The Way You Lie" provides great lyrics by Eminem where he can showcase his anger and a more pop song. New single "No Love" features Lil' Wayne and Eminem with two of the best verses these two rappers have ever released. This album from top to bottom features great hits and great guest spots proving that the Slim Shady is back.
4. Motion City Soundtrack: My Dinosaur Life
If you ever need an album you can go absolutely nuts jumping around to I advise you pick up My Dinosaur Life. Released early in the year, it instantly became one of my favorites with its fun lyrics and great music from start to the end. It's hard to point out high points with great songs in "Pulp Fiction", "Her Words Destroyed My Planet", "Disappear", and the amazingly titled "@!#?@!". Lyrics such as "You all need to leave me and my homeboys alone" let you know this album is a fun one all the way through with lead singer and guitar player Justin Pierre coming back from a battle against depression leading to an amazing album all the way through.
3. Bruno Mars: Doo-Wops & Hooligans
Bruno Mars came out this year featured in B.o.B's "Nothin' On You" and Travie McCoy's "Millionare" and people were left waiting to hear more of this Hawaiians voice. With one of the greatest unproduced voices of our generation, Bruno Mars did not let anyone down with his first full length. With singles out "Just The Way You Are" and "Grenade" it is easy to hear the ability of this man's voice. The album you hear Bruno Mars trying out different styles ranging from bluesy guitar to soft piano ballads and his musical talent and amazing voice allow them all to sound amazing.
2. Go Radio: Do Overs and Second Chances
I think the best way to point out how much I love this EP is to say in my iTunes this 7 song EP has a combined 263 plays. Go Radio is the new project by former member of Mayday Parade, Jason Lancaster. Lancaster has always been one of my favorite lyricists and with Go Radio he proves that he may be the best of them all. With only one song of the seven I don't enjoy screaming my lungs out too I can only see the best coming from this band after their second EP. "Thanks for Nothing" is the perfect song for when you need to just scream providing amazing back and forth vocals in the chorus. "Goodnight Moon" allows Jason to show off his amazing vocal abilities with a slow ballad with a chorus that you have to fight to not sing along to. "You Hold Your Breath, I'll Hold My Liquor" solidifies Lancaster in the lyricists hall of fame. Starting out with "And I thought I'd ask you something I thought I'd never ask a soul, about the nights we got so crazy we'd loose control" leading into a chorus you can't help but belting "And all I want to know, is can you hear me, I never spoke this clearly". This album will go down as the beginning of something amazing after a great release of their first EP "Welcome to Life" and I am eagerly anticipating their first full length due out in 2011.
1. A Day To Remember: What Separates Me From You
After 2009 release "Homesick" put up a fight for top release is 2009, I find myself amazed that just a year later they were able to do it again. My first spin of this record I was in a mood to relieve some stress and by the time I was done with the album I figured I'd be stress free for weeks. ADTR provides a much harder rock focusing on hard guitars, loud vocals, and even a bit of screaming. "All I Want", the first single from the album, uses A Day To Remembers formula of "soft" verses leading into power choruses screaming "keep your hopes up high and your head down low!". Leading off with "It's Complicated", Jeremy screams "Here we go again, another night of being bombed" and you know you are in for a treat of a song. "This Is The House That Doubt Built" contains my favorite lyrics of the album with an amazing chorus "forget everything just for tonight, we'll sing like everyone when their alone" and the song continues providing hope and inspiring lyrics. The rest of the album proves to keep up the high points with a more poppy "All Signs Point To Lauderdale" and even at the end of the album its hard to not muster up the energy to jump up as Jeremy screams "Lets Go!" at the beginning of "If I Leave". This album on my iTunes features 8/10 songs getting 5 stars, something that I don't think any full length has ever come close to.
